Kink and BDSM Glossary: Terms Explained

You walk into a channel, someone calls themselves a "switch into CNC with hard limits on impact," and you nod along like you got all of that. Maybe you did. Maybe you're quietly opening a tab to look up half of it. Either way, here's a working BDSM glossary for the words that actually fly around in chat, written by someone who's spent too many nights in these rooms. These are the kink terms people use mid-scene, not academic definitions nobody says out loud. Bookmark it, then go use it. New to the whole thing and just here to get your bearings? Kink curious chat is the room built for exactly that.

The basics

BDSM
The umbrella. Bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism, all crammed into one tidy acronym. Most people only do a slice of it, and that's normal.
Kink
Anything outside the vanilla menu. A catch-all for the stuff that turns you on but wouldn't make it into a romance novel's tasteful fade-to-black.
Vanilla
Sex without the gear, the roles, or the rules. Not an insult. Plenty of kinky people enjoy a quiet vanilla night too.
Scene
One contained session of play, with a beginning and an end. In a chat room a scene can run ten minutes or three hours, and when it's done, it's done.
RP
Roleplay. Acting out a scenario in text, often with action tags like *kneels*. Half of what happens in BDSM chat is RP, whether people call it that or not.

Dynamics and roles

D/s
Dominance and submission, the power exchange at the heart of most of this. One person leads, one follows, and both agreed to it beforehand. The D/s chat room is for the dynamic that keeps running past a single scene.
Dom / Domme
The one running the show. "Dom" is the general term, "Domme" usually flags a woman. If you want the female-led version of this, femdom chat is the room.
Dominatrix
The word splits into two: a paid, professional title with rates and a client list, or the lifestyle version, a Domme who's dominant because it's who she is, not a job she clocks into. This site only means the second kind. The dominatrix chat room is for people who came looking for her by name.
Sub
The one who hands over control. Submission isn't weakness, and anyone who tells you it is has never done it properly.
Top / bottom
Top does the action, bottom receives it. Note the difference from Dom and sub: a top can take direction, and plenty of bottoms run the whole scene from underneath.
Switch
Plays both sides, sometimes in the same night. Switches are the people who actually understand both ends of the leash. Switch chat is the room built around exactly that.
Brat
A sub who misbehaves on purpose, fishing for the correction. Done well it's playful sparring. Done badly it's just rude. There's a fine line and brats live on it. Brat chat is where that particular fine line gets walked.
Primal
Stripped-down, instinct-driven play. Less protocol, more growling, biting, chasing. The brain switches off and something older takes over.
Collaring
Putting a collar on a sub, literal or symbolic, to mark a committed dynamic. The text-chat version is a stated agreement that means something to both people. Not a casual thing. Collaring chat is where those dynamics talk it through.
Protocol
The agreed rules of conduct inside a dynamic. How a sub addresses their Dom, when they may speak, how they ask permission. Some keep it light, some run a full rulebook. Protocol chat is where the full-rulebook crowd hangs out.

Play types

Bondage
Restraint. Rope, cuffs, or in a text room, vivid description of being tied and helpless. The imagination does the knotwork.
Impact play
Spanking, flogging, paddling, anything that lands. In chat it's narrated blow by blow, which sounds odd until you've felt how well the anticipation reads in text.
Edging
Bringing someone right to the brink and stopping. Repeat until they're a mess. The cruelty is the point. The edging room paces it live.
Gooning
Edging extended into a zoned-out trance state, where the daze itself is the destination rather than a stop on the way. The gooning chat room is where people go under together.
Denial
Withholding release, sometimes for a scene, sometimes for weeks. If this is your thing, the orgasm denial room exists for exactly it.
Chastity
Locked-up denial, with the key held by someone else. A long game of control that lives mostly in the head. The chastity crowd takes the calendar very seriously.
CBT
In this context, not the therapy. It's targeted pain play below the belt, for the people who want their sensation sharp and specific.
SPH
Small penis humiliation. A degradation flavor with a narrow focus, popular in femdom and humiliation rooms alike.
JOI
Jerk-off instructions. A guided session where someone tells you exactly when, how, and whether to finish. Texts beautifully because it's all words anyway.
CNC
Consensual non-consent. Both people agree, in advance and out of character, to play a scene where consent is acted as absent. Negotiation first, always, no exceptions.
Free use
A standing agreement, negotiated in advance, that one partner is "available" inside the fiction without asking each time. The standing consent always keeps an off switch. The free use room runs on exactly that architecture.
Somnophilia
A pre-negotiated roleplay between two awake adults where the "sleep" is a character choice, played by someone reading every line and holding a safeword. The somnophilia room covers how the scene works.
Voyeurism / exhibitionism
Two kinks that are each other's audience: one side gets off on watching, the other on being watched, and both need willing participants to work. The voyeur and exhibitionist rooms sit on opposite sides of the same glass.
Pet play
One person takes on an animal persona, pup, kitten, pony, and the other handles them as such. More headspace than costume. The pet play room is where the leashes come out.
Sissy
Feminization play, where a sub is dressed and trained into a femme role. The sissy training room runs the full curriculum.
Findom
Financial domination. The sub's wallet is the kink. Money changes hands as an act of submission, which is its own strange and specific high.
Foot worship
Adoration aimed at feet, from soft devotion to full service. A gateway kink for a lot of subs and a whole world of its own. See foot worship.
Degradation / humiliation
Being talked down to, on purpose, because it works. For the people who get off on the sting, the humiliation room is home. Not everyone's flavor, and that's fine.
Praise
The opposite end. "Good" lands like a reward, and for some subs a well-timed praise hits harder than any insult could. Praise kinks are quietly everywhere.

Safety words and care

Safeword
The word that stops everything, instantly, no questions. It exists so the play can go further, not less far. Using it is never a failure. In text, a clear out-of-character "red" does the same job.
Hard limit / soft limit
A hard limit is an absolute no, off the table forever. A soft limit is a maybe, a "not today" or "only with someone I trust." Know both before you start.
SSC
Safe, sane, consensual. The old-school baseline for ethical play. A bit tidy for some, but a decent first filter.
RACK
Risk-aware consensual kink. The grown-up upgrade to SSC: nothing is perfectly "safe," so be honest about the risks and consent with eyes open.
Aftercare
The wind-down after a scene. Reassurance, a check-in, a few kind words while everyone comes back to earth. Skipping it is bad form, even in chat.
Subspace
The floaty, dropped-out headspace a sub can slip into mid-scene. Lovely from the inside, which is exactly why aftercare matters on the way out.
Dom drop
The crash a Dom can hit afterward, guilt or emptiness once the adrenaline fades. Less talked about than subdrop, just as real. Doms need care too.

That's the working vocabulary. You won't need all of it, and you'll pick up plenty more the moment you start talking to people. The room's open whenever you are.
