Search for a Dom and you'll find plenty of people happy to give orders for an evening. That's not what someone trying to find a handler is actually after. A handler runs a longer, quieter job: routine, consistency, someone tracking how you're doing across a whole stretch of time rather than for the length of one scene. It's a specific enough need that it earns its own search instead of folding into the general one, and searching under "Dom" alone tends to surface people who are great for an hour and gone before the routine ever forms.
The handler role is caretaking with a leash attached
Commands are the visible part, the part that looks like the whole job from outside. They aren't. Underneath the commands, a handler is tracking mood, noticing when a pet's headspace is thinning out, deciding when to push and when to ease off entirely. Someone drawn to that side of things treats a scene less like a performance to run and more like a person to look after, and that priority tends to show early, in how they ask questions rather than in how many orders they give. A leash held by someone in it purely for the authority feels different within minutes, even in text, because the questions stop.
Command isn't the job
Plenty of people enjoy giving instructions without wanting any of the responsibility that comes bundled with a real handler role. That's worth separating out before you commit to anyone. Ask how they've handled a pet who went quiet mid-scene, or what they do when someone's clearly not in the headspace they were hoping for. A real handler has an answer already, because it's happened before and mattered enough to remember. Someone who's only ever played the commanding part tends to shrug the question off or turn it back on you, or answer with more commands, as though the question itself was a cue to perform rather than something to actually consider.
Same search, different thing to listen for

What's different is what you're screening for once someone answers, and that's worth being upfront about early rather than assuming it'll sort itself out later.
