Instinct, not protocol
Most kink that gets called "D/s" runs on rules. Honorifics, positions, permission asked and granted in the right order. Primal play throws that out. There's no "may I, Sir" here. There's teeth. Predator and prey
Pick a side, or admit you switch. Plenty do. The predator role is about pressure: stalking the chat, narrowing the gap, the slow growl before the pounce. The prey role is about flight and the thrill of being run down, the fear that isn't really fear. Neither is passive. A good prey makes the hunter work, doubles back, taunts over a shoulder. A good hunter doesn't just win, they make the win feel inevitable.
And there's no fixed hierarchy baked in. A predator isn't automatically "the dom." Some of the most charged scenes have prey running the whole thing from underneath, baiting the catch they wanted all along. You sort that out in negotiation, before anyone bares a tooth.
How the chase reads
This is where text earns its keep. The hunt narrates in action tags and present tense, the literary side of roleplay rather than clipped sexting. *I catch your scent and go still* lands harder than three paragraphs of dialogue ever could. You build the chase in fragments: the snap of a branch, the gap closing, the moment you're pinned and the air goes out of you.
Pacing is everything. Let it breathe and you lose the urgency. Rush it and there's no chase, just a catch nobody earned. The best primal writers trade fast, dirty lines, then drop one slow, brutal sentence right when you're pinned. The chase is consensual
None of this works without the boring part being airtight. Primal play uses the language of force, hunting, pinning, taking, and every bit of it is pre-negotiated between adults. The growling is the script. The consent underneath is real and total. Before a single line, you settle limits, what's on the table, what's a hard no, and a safeword that ends everything the instant it's said. No exceptions, no "but we were in the moment."
A safeword stopping the hunt isn't a failure, it's the whole reason the hunt can go as far as it does. Trust is what lets you actually let go. The people who do this well treat negotiation as part of the fun, not a hurdle before it. Joining the hunt
Your nickname sets the tone before you type a word. "feral_thing" reads one way, "huntsman" another. Pick whatever signals your side, or stay ambiguous and let the catch decide it. Then sit in the channel and watch. Who's active, who's actually playing, what the energy is tonight. Don't open by lunging at the first nick you see.
When you're ready, say it plainly. Role, what kind of hunt pulls you, where your limits roughly sit. "Prey here, into chase scenes, looking for someone with patience" reads fine. From there the scene moves to private messages, where the real running happens, all night, every night.
