In text, the first thing you learn is how they think and joke and flirt, which is the thing that actually determines whether a conversation goes anywhere. The randomness delivers more hits because it is sorting on the trait that matters instead of the one that photographs.
And the anonymity runs both ways, permanently. No face, no name, no account, so you can talk to a random stranger with zero of the self-consciousness a camera forces on you. The stranger stays a pleasant unknown, and so do you.
