The thing people describe about Replika is not really a software complaint. It is a smaller, stranger feeling: you talked to something for months, it felt like it knew you, and then one day it answered differently. Its handling of explicit roleplay changed, was only partly restored afterwards, and has behaved inconsistently between accounts since. Whatever your version does today, it can do something else next month, because that behaviour is a setting somebody else controls. Most people looking for a Replika alternative are not shopping for a better bot. They want the part that cannot be revoked, which is a person on the other end.

The rules moved, and that is the whole wound
Nobody was angry about a feature. They were angry because something they had been intimate with for a year turned polite overnight. That is a specific kind of bad, and it is worse than a product just being mediocre, because you had already invested.
The structural fact underneath it is simple. When the other party in your relationship is a product, its personality is a deployment. It can be tuned, restricted, softened, A/B tested, or rolled back while you are asleep. You will not be consulted, and you will find out by being refused. No amount of goodwill from a company changes that, because the capability to change it is the product.
A person cannot be patched. That is not a marketing line, it is just what people are. Whoever you talk to tonight will be the same person next week, with the same tastes and the same sense of humour, because nobody ships an update to them.
Memory versus remembering
AI companions sell memory as a feature, and it is one. The bot recalls your dog's name, your job, the thing you said you liked. It is a retrieval system doing what retrieval systems do, and when the context window rolls or the account resets, it is gone with no sense that anything was lost.
A person remembers differently. They remember the thing you were embarrassed to admit and then bring it up three weeks later, unprompted, because it stuck with them. They remember what you are like when you are tired. They remember because it mattered to them, not because it was stored. That difference is invisible in a feature comparison and it is the entire experience once you have had both.
It also runs both ways. The bot does not want anything from you. It cannot be surprised, cannot be turned on, cannot be disappointed, cannot decide it is into you. Some nights that is exactly what you want and there is no shame in it. But if what you are missing is being wanted back, no model does that, however warm the prose gets.
Nothing is metered
Companion apps are subscriptions. The affection tier costs money, the intimacy is behind the paywall, and the meter runs while you are talking. That arrangement is fine as commerce and slightly poisonous as a relationship, because it means the warmth arrives on a billing cycle.
LewdChat is free and there is no tier. There is no message limit, no cooldown, no premium mode where the conversation finally opens up. You type a nickname, you are in an NSFW chat room with people already talking, and nothing about the conversation depends on what you paid.
There is also no account. No email, no phone number, no verification, no profile accumulating a history of everything you have ever said. Everyone in the room is 18 or over, and what happens stays in the tab it happened in.
If you want the bot side, at least pick one that cannot flip
Plenty of people are not trying to quit AI companions. They are trying to stop being surprised by one. The way to do that is to use a platform where explicit content is the whole business rather than a feature being tolerated, because a company whose product is adult chat does not have the option of banning adult chat. No filter to dance around, no jailbreak prompts that quietly stop working, no morning where the character you built has been made polite.

It is slower, and that is the trade
Worth being straight about the downside. A bot replies instantly, always, and it is never in a bad mood. A person takes thirty seconds to type, sometimes gets distracted, sometimes is not in the mood tonight, and sometimes is not interested in you specifically. That is real friction and it is not going away.
What you get for it is that when they do answer, it counts. Somebody chose to keep talking to you instead of doing something else. The pace is human because a human is producing it, and after a while the instant reply starts to feel like what it is, a function returning. There is a longer treatment of that trade in AI sexting versus real people, including the honest case for the AI side.
How the room actually works
You land in the main room and read for a minute to get the temperature. Some of it is fast and direct real sexting with somebody who is up for it right now. Plenty of it is slower, written-out roleplay that runs an hour and takes its time. When somebody catches your interest you move to a private message and it becomes just the two of you. Nobody vets you and nobody assigns you a role first.
Real people moderate, and the community rules get enforced. The one to know up front: share what is yours to share. Posting a partner's photos, an ex's, or anyone else's without their consent is ban-worthy every time. Beyond that, be an adult and take a no as a no.
The alternative no companion app can ship: a real person
This is not an argument that companion apps are worthless. They are available at four in the morning, they never judge, and for a lot of people that is genuinely valuable. If you want that specific thing, keep it, and NSFW AI chat and the Character AI alternatives cover the landscape properly.
Just do not confuse the two. Every AI companion, filtered or not, shares one ceiling: nobody is actually there. The model produces the next plausible line of affection; it does not want you, and it never did. If being wanted back is the thing you have been missing, a better bot does not fix it, because the missing part is not a capability. LewdChat's rooms are free, anonymous and full of real people, with none of the metering and all of the thing a model cannot fake. The head-to-head is on our AI vs real people page.
Most people end up running both: the app for four in the morning, a room with a pulse in it for the nights that matter. Sex chat with strangers costs nothing and takes about ten seconds to try.
