Gorean Chat Rooms

Walk into a Gorean room using ordinary kink vocabulary and you will be corrected inside two lines, politely if you are lucky. It is one of the few corners of this world with its own dialect, its own etiquette, and a strong sense of who has read the source material and who is guessing. Gorean chat is worth understanding before you type in it, so this page is a description rather than a welcome mat. Pick a nickname and the room is open, no signup, nothing to prove first.

Where it comes from

Gor is the invented world of a long-running series of science fantasy novels by John Norman, beginning in the 1960s and running to dozens of volumes. The setting is a counter-earth with a rigid caste structure, city-states organised around a Home Stone, and a social order in which some people are Free and some are owned. The books are pulp adventure with a philosophy bolted to the side of them, and that philosophy is explicitly about the natural order of men and women, stated at length and without apology.

What happened next is the interesting part. Readers built a subculture out of the setting, and because the source material is prose, that subculture assembled itself almost entirely in text rooms. Gor is one of the very few kink communities that was effectively born online and never depended on a venue. Which is why it reads so distinctly: the etiquette, the phrasing and the formality all developed in typed conversation and were never translated from anywhere else.

The vocabulary, plainly

You need a handful of words to follow a Gorean room at all, and using them wrong is the fastest way to be pegged as a visitor.

Free Man and Free Woman are the unowned. Master and Mistress are how the owned address them, and the capitalisation is not decorative, it is part of the convention. A kajira is a female slave, kajirae in the plural; a kajirus is the male counterpart, considerably rarer in most rooms. Silks are what a kajira wears and the colour carries meaning. Nadu is a specific kneeling position and one of a set that a serving kajira is expected to know without being told. Serves are the ritualised offerings of food and drink that make up a large part of what actually happens in a busy room, written out in full and judged on their grace. A Home Stone is the anchor of a city and, by extension, of a household. Tal is a greeting. La kajira is a declaration of what one is.

Beyond the words, there is a whole layer of positional and behavioural convention that differs from room to room, house to house, and one online city to another. Gorean rooms are not standardised and never have been, and any claim that there is one correct version should be read as an opinion. Some of this vocabulary overlaps with mainstream kink terms in the BDSM glossary, but the meanings are not always the same and assuming they are is a common newcomer error.

Online Gor and real-time Gor

The community makes a hard distinction here and you should know which one a person is talking about. Online Gor is roleplay: a shared fiction set in the world of the books, with characters, cities, and a great deal of writing. Real-time Gor refers to people who run the philosophy as an actual relationship structure off the page, closer to what the wider scene would call a full-time master slave dynamic or total power exchange, with Gorean vocabulary and standards in place of the usual ones.

Plenty of people do both and plenty do only one. Some online Gor players find the real-time crowd humourless. Some real-time Goreans regard the online cities as costume drama. A large group of Goreans are also somewhat separate from mainstream kink altogether and do not describe what they do as BDSM at all, which is worth knowing before you use the term in front of them.

Why the wider scene is split on it

Being honest about this serves everyone better than pretending it is uncontroversial. The books that the culture is built on argue for the inherent submission of women as a natural fact, and a portion of the community treats that argument as doctrine rather than as the premise of a fiction. That is the substance of the objection you will hear from the rest of the kink world: not that the aesthetic is silly, but that a framework holding submission to be innate rather than chosen sits awkwardly against a scene whose entire foundation is negotiated, revocable consent.

The counterargument from inside is also real, and usually goes like this: the philosophy describes what a person has found true about themselves, the arrangement is entered voluntarily by adults, and every Gorean household anyone would recommend runs on the same vetting and the same limits as any other serious dynamic. Both of those positions exist in numbers. You will meet people who hold each of them, sometimes in the same room, and it is not this page's job to settle the argument.

Our position is narrow and it is about the rooms rather than the philosophy. Everyone here is an adult, everything is consensual, and consent stays revocable no matter what vocabulary is layered on top of it. A framing that tells someone their agreement was never the relevant question has left what these rooms are for, and the house rules apply regardless of what any household's internal standards say.

Walking in without embarrassing yourself

Read before you type. Gorean rooms run slower than most and lurking for a while is not rude, it is expected. Ask a Free person a question rather than announcing what you know. If you are new, saying so is far better received than a confident wrong serve, and most rooms have someone who genuinely enjoys teaching.

Do not use Gorean vocabulary at people who have not asked for it. Address a stranger as Master or kajira in a general room and you have made an assumption about them that is nobody's to make. And do not expect Gorean etiquette to hold outside a Gorean context, which is a mistake that goes both ways: the formality of a protocol chat room is the nearest general equivalent, but the two conventions are not interchangeable.

If what actually appeals to you is the setting, the writing, and the long serves rather than the philosophy, that is a legitimate way in and the fantasy roleplay chat room is full of people who write in the same register with different scenery. If what appeals is the depth of the authority rather than the world, dom sub chat and the M/s rooms cover that ground without the vocabulary. And if you are entering an ongoing Gorean dynamic rather than a scene, the slow vetting described in kink scam warning signs applies here exactly as it does anywhere else, because urgency is the same warning sign in every dialect.

Sit, read, and get the greeting right before you try the serve.
